Ten things to see in Comacchio
1. The Trepponti Bridge
It is one of the main symbols of the city, among the most iconic and most often represented by artists who have decided to tell the story of Comacchio. You may also know it by the name Ponte Pallotta and it was built over the canal that, in 1638, was used to lead boats to the Adriatic Sea.
2. Visit to the Museo Delta Antico
Recently completed, the Museo Delta Antico was built inside the former hospital for the sick, active until the early 1800s. Inside, you can fully experience the entire history of the city of Comacchio, starting from the Roman era. The highlight of the tour is the Roman ship found in 1981 during work on the drainage canals surrounding the city.
3. Civic Tower
What you can admire is a nineteenth-century reconstruction of a tower that has stood over Comacchio since 1300. Inside it is a mechanical clock dating back to that same era.
4. Grain Loggia
Among the 10 things to see in Comacchio, the Grain Loggia cannot be missed, whose creation is attributed to the Ferrara architect Giovan Battista Aleotti. Built between 1615 and 1623, it features Istrian stone columns and brick pillars, built during the renovatio urbis under the legation of Cardinal Giacomo Serra.
5. Cathedral of San Cassiano
This is a spacious and imposing work, located on Via Ugo Bassi in Comacchio, built in 1740 by the architect Giacomo Cerrutti. Entry is free, so why miss the opportunity to visit this church in the heart of the city?
6. The canals of Comacchio
If they call it “the little Venice” there must be a reason. There are several canals that cross the historic center of Comacchio. For a visit to the city from a renewed point of view, just ask the many men in boats available to take you on an excursion.
7. Excursion in the valleys
There are various ways you can experience the valleys:
on foot, walking along one of the many hiking trails
by bicycle, thanks to the numerous rental points
by boat, for a unique perspective
Whatever the chosen means, an environmental guide will be available to help you discover even more about the territory.
8. Visit to the salt pans
During the visit to the valleys, we recommend a detour to the former salt pans, an important nesting site for flamingos, visible from early spring to late summer.
9. Fishing huts
These are the traditional structures used by Comacchio fishermen to carry out their work. Near the former huts, you can also admire the areas dedicated to eel fishing, a specialty of the area.
10. Typical cuisine
As the last stop on this To Do list, a stop at one of the typical restaurants in the area. The specialty is obviously eel, to be enjoyed:
marinated
grilled
in brodetto
stewed
Alongside it, the locally caught seafood: mussels, clams, cuttlefish...
And to complete the meal, don’t forget to ask for a couple of bread, a typical specialty of Comacchio and all of Ferrara.
